Haus Meer, Manor house and monastery in Meerbusch, Germany.
Haus Meer is a former monastery and manor house in Meerbusch, North Rhine-Westphalia, combining religious and residential use within a single complex. Several buildings make up the ensemble, enclosed by a moat and set within landscaped grounds.
The site traces its origins to a medieval monastic foundation and was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. Secularization in the early 19th century ended its monastic use, after which the buildings served as a manor residence.
The name "Haus Meer" comes from a Middle High German word for a pond or still body of water, referring to the moat surrounding the property. Visitors notice this water element immediately, as it frames the view of the buildings and shapes how the grounds are approached.
A visit works best when combined with a guided tour, as the buildings and grounds are not freely accessible at all times. Checking in advance whether a public tour or event is scheduled on the day you plan to visit is a good idea.
Although the monastery ceased to exist in the early 19th century, the moat system survived largely intact and still encloses the grounds today. This gives the property the character of a water castle, even though it was never conceived as a fortification.
