Merkur Spiel-Arena, Multi-purpose sports arena in Stockum, Düsseldorf, Germany
The Merkur Spiel-Arena is a multi-purpose sports facility in Stockum, Düsseldorf, Germany, equipped with a sliding roof and offering seating for 54,600 spectators. For concert configurations that include standing areas the capacity can expand to 66,500 people.
This venue opened in 2004 on the grounds of the former Rheinstadion, designed by the architecture firm JSK Architekten. The new construction aimed to create a contemporary setting for sporting events and modernize the infrastructure of the region.
This facility is among the largest venues in the Rhineland and regularly welcomes crowds for home matches of the local football club as well as international contests in different sports. During major concerts the interior is transformed entirely, allowing visitors to stand on the pitch while the field becomes a stage.
Visitors reach the grounds via Merkur Spiel-Arena/Messe Nord station, which connects directly to Düsseldorf's urban rail network. During major events it is advisable to use public transport, as parking options in the surrounding area can be limited.
On January 10, 2024, the stadium set a world record when 53,586 spectators attended a match of the European Men's Handball Championship. This number exceeded all previous attendance figures for a handball game in an enclosed hall.
