Schalke

Schalke is a residential district in Gelsenkirchen with housing areas, industrial sites, and multiple railway connections throughout the region. The neighborhood displays a mix of older buildings and modern structures shaped by its industrial past.

The district originated as an agricultural settlement first recorded in 1246 before transforming into an industrial center in the 19th century through coal mining. This shift permanently shaped its structure and economy.

The neighborhood has been closely linked to football since the founding of FC Schalke 04 in 1904, shaping local identity. The club remains an important part of how residents see themselves.

The area is well served by the A42 motorway and several railway lines, making it easy to reach. Visitors should expect regular trains and traffic when moving about on foot.

Industrialist Friedrich Grillo built major factories here in the 19th century, including ironworks and a glass facility. His investments fundamentally changed the neighborhood from a village into a working-class region.
