Mine Prosper-Haniel, Coal mine in Bottrop, Germany
Mine Prosper-Haniel is a coal mining facility beneath Bottrop with an underground tunnel network stretching about 26 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 1,300 meters below the surface. The site includes several pit head installations, processing buildings, and industrial structures that organized mining operations across many decades.
The facility was established in 1863 and reached its employment peak in 1922 with about 15,000 workers before coal mining gradually declined in importance. The pit ended its final operations in December 2018, concluding more than 150 years of mining tradition in the region.
The mine shaped generations of families across the region, where mining knowledge and work traditions were passed down through families. The worker culture remains visible today in the buildings and structures that surround the pit head installations.
Visiting the facility requires special care since some installations are under heritage protection and not freely accessible to the public. Information about guided tours or surface exhibitions should be obtained in advance.
After closure, plans emerged to convert the shafts into a pumped storage power station for generating and storing renewable energy. This project demonstrates how former industrial sites could gain a second life using modern energy technology.
