Wasserburg Gommern

Wasserburg Gommern is a medieval water castle in Gommern, built on an artificial hill and surrounded by protective walls and a moat system. The structure features a prominent tower with thick stone walls that extend across the entire fortified area.

The castle originated in the 10th century on the site of a Slavic fortress and later underwent major rebuilding in the 16th century. This transformation converted the structure into a hunting residence for Saxon rulers.

The castle features a 40-meter-high tower with three-meter-thick walls and a distinctive onion-shaped dome that marks the regional architectural heritage.

Visitors can explore the grounds on foot and view the structures from outside, as the pathways around the site are generally accessible. Inside the fortified walls, you will find a hotel, a restaurant, and an ecological brewery offering various services to guests.

The castle's stones come partly from nearby quartzite quarries, with some materials repurposed from a demolished monastery nearby. This mixing of local stone and recycled materials gives the structure layers of hidden history.
