Gesteinsgarten Gommern

Gesteinsgarten Gommern is a geological open-air collection featuring over 240 rock specimens from more than 200 locations, with individual stones weighing between 1 and 3 tons each. The rocks are arranged by type and origin, showing a wide range of materials from crystalline formations to sedimentary deposits across Europe.

The area recalls centuries of quartzite mining in Gommern that supplied building materials to Magdeburg Cathedral during the medieval period. The collection itself was established in 1995 by geoscientists and has since grown into one of the largest rock assemblies in German-speaking Europe.

Geoscientists initiated this geological garden in April 1995, creating Germany's largest open-air rock collection with support from local organizations.

The garden is located roughly 15 kilometers southeast of Magdeburg along route B246a and remains open year-round with no entrance fee. Stones are scattered across the outdoor space, making a visit naturally combine walking and observation, so comfortable footwear is advisable.

A glacial pot discovered by Felix Wahnschaffe in 1902 is housed here, a rare geological formation from the ice age era. Beyond this distinctive feature, the rocks come from multiple European countries and German states across the continent.
