Schloss Randau, Manor house in Randau-Calenberge district, Magdeburg, Germany.
Schloss Randau is a classical manor house in the Randau district of Magdeburg, built in 1885 on the foundations of an earlier estate. The building has a symmetrical facade with columns, round arched arcades, and a formal exterior staircase.
A fortified structure on this site was first recorded in 1236 and belonged to the Lords of Randau until Hanseatic troops destroyed it in 1297. The estate that followed passed to the Alvensleben family in 1391, who held it for several centuries before the current building was constructed.
The name Randau goes back to a medieval settlement that no longer exists as a village today. Walking around the building, visitors can notice the formal layout of the grounds, which still follows the plan of a noble country estate from the 19th century.
The building can be viewed from the outside and sits on the edge of Magdeburg in an area that is easy to reach by car. The grounds around the house are open for a walk, which gives different views of the facade from various angles.
The main avenue leading from the house was laid out in the 19th century so that it pointed directly toward Magdeburg Cathedral, creating a deliberate sight line between the two buildings. A stretch of forest now partly blocks this view, but the alignment is still visible on a clear day.
