Ernst-Thälmann-Denkmal

The Ernst-Thälmann Memorial is a bronze statue in Stralsund depicting an oversized figure with a raised right fist on a stone base. The trapezoidal square is bordered by low sandstone walls and features an information plaque with historical details.

The memorial was created following a fundraising campaign and inaugurated in 1962, with Irma Thälmann, the politician's daughter, present at the opening. The sculpture was created to honor resistance against Nazi rule and establish a mark in the city landscape.

The memorial site is perceived by visitors as a place remembering antifascist resistance movements. The bronze figure with its powerful gesture shapes the appearance of the Sundpromenade and is recognized by many as a symbol of historical commitment.

The memorial stands on the Sundpromenade, a well-visited waterfront promenade in central Stralsund. The location is easily reached and offers good views of the statue from different sides of the square.

Looking at the memorial from above, a sickle-shaped stone wall appears behind the statue. This geometric form weaves symbolic elements into the design of the square and shows the thoughtful composition of the entire ensemble.
