Sanddüne Wedding, Protected sand dune formation in Wedding, Berlin.
Sanddüne Wedding is a protected sand dune in the Wedding neighborhood that rises approximately 15 meters above the surrounding area. The formation consists of fine sand deposits and sits within a densely populated residential district.
The dune formed approximately 18,000 years ago during the last ice age as a glacial deposit in Berlin's valley system. It remains a relic of the ice-age landscape that fundamentally shaped the region.
The site serves as a learning space where school groups explore natural geology and ice-age formations in the middle of the city. Visitors experience how Berlin's landscape was shaped by ancient glacial processes.
The site is accessible only during the operating hours of the School Environmental Center located at Scharnweberstrasse. Check ahead before visiting, as the dune is part of an educational facility rather than a public park.
This is the last remaining ice-age dune formation within an inner-city area in Germany, making it a rare geological witness to the past. Its preservation surrounded by houses and urban development makes it particularly noteworthy.
