Marstallmuseum, Royal carriage museum at Nymphenburg Palace, Munich, Germany
Description
The Marstallmuseum holds around forty royal carriages, sleighs, and ceremonial wagons displayed in a former stable wing of Nymphenburg Palace. The collection spans transportation vehicles used by Bavarian courts from the 1600s through the 1900s.
History
The original collection began in 1923 but survived World War II by being moved away from central Munich for safety. It was transferred to its current home at Nymphenburg Palace in 1952, where it has remained on display since then.
Culture
The name refers to the former royal stables where the court kept its horses and carriages before they were exhibited here. Visitors can still see the rustic stone walls and layout that once bustled with the activity of preparing horses and vehicles for palace travel.
Practical
You enter the museum through the main palace building, so allow extra time to navigate the historic structure and find the former stables section. Combined tickets give you access to both this collection and the porcelain exhibition without purchasing separate entries.
Did you know?
The collection includes complete ceremonial equipment for royal horses such as ornately decorated bridles, saddles, and reins from different eras. These finely crafted pieces have been carefully restored and show the skilled craftsmanship that went into preparing horses for formal court processions.
