Oberhausmuseum

The Oberhausmuseum is housed within a medieval fortress overlooking Passau and displays collections across multiple levels that trace the region's development over centuries. The exhibition spaces are distributed throughout different floors of the castle complex.

The fortress was built in the 13th century and the museum was established in 1885 to document the area's past. The site has served multiple purposes over time, beginning as a defense structure and later becoming a repository for the region's history.

The exhibits showcase regional artifacts, traditional crafts, and religious objects that reflect the daily life and practices of people who lived here. Visitors can see how local traditions have shaped communities across Eastern Bavaria over time.

The museum is located in a fortress that sits prominently above Passau and is accessible to visitors throughout the year. Expect to climb several flights of stairs while moving through the different levels of the building, so wear comfortable shoes.

Imprisoned members of a religious group created a hymnal in the fortress cells during the 16th century, and this hymnal is still sung by Amish communities today. The book is one of the oldest continuous songbooks in use and reveals a surprising connection between this fortress and modern religious practices.
