Veitskirche, Protestant church on Veitsberg, Thuringia.
The Veitskirche is a church building on Veitsberg near Wünschendorf/Elster featuring a massive western bell tower and Gothic portals. The structure includes an octagonal sacristy integrated into the remains of a former castle.
The building dates to 974 when an Otto chapel served as a castle chapel and underwent major expansion around 1170 with Romanesque additions. This Romanesque period shaped the architectural foundation of the structure as it stands today.
The late Gothic altarpiece from 1480 shows finely carved scenes from the lives of Mary and Jesus that reveal themselves when the wings open. These works by Hans Topher rank among the precious artistic treasures found here.
The building is accessible through the residential area of Wünschendorf/Elster and is regularly used for services and monthly concerts. Visitors should observe local guidelines and treat the space respectfully.
A south window contains glass fragments from 1170-1190 depicting the Root of Jesse, showing Jesus's family ancestry. These medieval glass works are rare examples of the craftsmanship of that era.
