Hirsholmene, Protected archipelago in Frederikshavn Municipality, Denmark

Hirsholmene is an archipelago of ten small islands in the Kattegat sea, located roughly 7 kilometers northeast of Frederikshavn. The islands feature flat terrain with rocky outcrops that rise from the water, creating a sparse and windswept landscape.

The Danish government established this archipelago as a nature reserve in 1938. International protection followed when it was designated a Ramsar site in 1977, recognizing its importance as a wetland area.

Danish author Dines Skafte Jespersen documented his experiences on Hirsholm island through three autobiographical books about island life.

Boats can moor at the harbor under specific regulations including speed limits and daily mooring fees. Access to the southern pier closes between April and July to protect nesting birds and other wildlife during the breeding season.

Writer Dines Skafte Jespersen documented his island life in three autobiographical books about living on one of these islands. Dogs and cats are permanently banned from the archipelago to avoid disturbing the bird populations that depend on the area for breeding.
