ETRR-2, Nuclear research reactor in Inshas, Egypt.
ETRR-2 is a nuclear research reactor located in Inshas, Egypt, built for materials testing and neutron research. It uses light water as a coolant and has multiple channels designed for scientific experiments and analytical work.
The reactor was designed and built by the Argentine company INVAP and reached its first critical operation in 1997. It was officially inaugurated in 1998 and has since served as Egypt's main nuclear research center.
The reactor is used by Egyptian scientists and students who carry out hands-on nuclear research on site. It is one of the few places in the region where neutron-based experiments can be conducted directly.
The site sits inside a restricted security zone and is only accessible with prior authorization. Anyone interested in visiting should reach out in advance to understand the access requirements and safety conditions.
The reactor has 5 horizontal channels built specifically for neutron radiography and isotope production. This combination is found in very few research facilities anywhere in the world.
