Lille Langebro, Double swing bridge in Inner Harbour, Copenhagen, Denmark
Lille Langebro is a swing bridge spanning 175 meters across Copenhagen's Inner Harbour with two rotating sections that pivot to allow ships to pass through a 35-meter opening. The two movable spans swing outward to the sides, keeping the pedestrian and cycling paths above clear while vessels pass beneath.
The bridge opened in July 2019 as a modern addition to Copenhagen's transportation network. It was built to strengthen the connection between Zealand and Amager islands with contemporary infrastructure.
The structure reflects Copenhagen's dedication to sustainable transportation, providing separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians to cross between Zealand and Amager islands.
Be aware that the bridge opens for ships when needed, and this process takes about two minutes in either direction. The area is well-marked with signals and barriers to guide pedestrians and cyclists during operations.
The structure uses four electric motors and large diameter bearings connected with pinions to rotate the moving sections. Hydraulic cylinders work simultaneously to dampen vibrations and keep the bridge stable during operation.
