Mezquita de Almonaster, Islamic mosque on Castle Hill, Almonaster la Real, Spain
The Mezquita de Almonaster is an Islamic prayer building on a hill in Almonaster la Real with five separate halls arranged around a central courtyard. The structure displays layers of construction from different periods visible in its stonework and layout.
This building was erected in the 9th century under Abd al-Rahman III using stone from an earlier 6th-century Visigothic basilica on the same site. The reuse of older materials reflects how construction practices adapted existing remains into new structures.
The structure reflects the architectural evolution through different periods, combining Roman, Islamic, and Gothic elements within its construction methods and decorative features.
This site sits on a hill within the village and is accessible on foot from the main settlement. The climb is gradual, making the walk manageable for most visitors.
This is the only surviving mosque built in rural Spain outside urban centers. Its remote location preserves a rare example of Islamic architecture from a time when most such buildings existed in city strongholds.
