Torre del Palau, Medieval palace tower in Terrassa, Spain.
Torre del Palau is a cylindrical stone tower standing about 27 meters tall with a base diameter of around 7.5 meters, built from river stones and carved blocks. It is the last remaining structure of a larger medieval castle complex that once occupied this location.
The tower was first documented in 1016 as part of a larger castle complex. The surrounding complex was demolished in 1891, but the tower itself survived and was later modified during the late 19th century.
The tower displays Gothic architectural details that reflect how people built structures in this region during the Middle Ages. These stone features and windows show the building methods and design preferences of that era.
The original entrance sits about 7 meters above ground level, reflecting medieval security features. A modern metal staircase now provides access to the tower, making it easier for visitors to enter and explore.
The crown of the tower was added in the late 19th century by architect Lluís Muncunill and features a brick merlon frieze above a cornice with blind arcades. This addition blends medieval remains with later modernist design sensibilities.
