Can Mestres, Historic house in Sarrià, Barcelona, Spain
Can Mestres is a historic house in Sarrià, Barcelona, Spain. The building has a main two-storey section with a gabled roof and a lower wing with a gallery of square windows above a balcony supported by round arches, and its walls are decorated with two-tone sgraffito patterns.
The first building on the site dates from the 16th century, and a major renovation in the 18th century gave it a more residential character. In 1958 it was bought by the doctor Agustí Pedro i Pons, who restored the interior and later left the estate to the University of Barcelona.
The name Can Mestres comes from the Mestres family, and the house is also known as Finca Pedro i Pons after the doctor who owned it. Today it serves as the headquarters of a university foundation, and its gardens and sgraffito facades are a familiar sight for residents of the area.
The house is set on a large plot with a terraced garden in front and a wooded area behind, all enclosed by a fence. Visitors can view the exterior from the avenue, but the interior is not regularly open to the public, so it is best to check access conditions in advance.
A sundial on the facade bears the date 1766, marking the year of a major renovation. In the garden, a ceramic mosaic displays a quote attributed to Confucius about a house full of books and a garden full of flowers.
