Cárcel correccional de Oviedo, Former correctional prison building in Oviedo, Spain.
The Cárcel Correccional de Oviedo features a star-shaped panopticon design with five radiating galleries extending from a central polygonal nucleus topped by a glazed cupola.
Constructed between 1886 and 1905 by architects Francisco Javier Aguirre and Nicolás García Rivero, this prison operated until 1993 before becoming a cultural heritage site.
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2003, the building represents Spanish penitentiary architecture evolution and now houses the Historical Archive of Asturias since 2010.
Located on Arcipreste de Hita Street, the 14,421 square meter complex underwent renovation between 2005-2009 with an investment of 18.5 million euros.
This building was the first in Spain to use reinforced concrete in horizontal structures, pioneering construction technology in early 20th century penitentiary architecture.
