Casas del Cuitu, Protected residential building on Calle Uría, Oviedo, Spain.
Casas del Cuitu is a residential building in Oviedo featuring large columns, sculptures, and ornamental details that spread across its main and side facades. The structure shows a carefully designed layout with multiple decorative elements that once housed well-off families in substantial apartments.
Built between 1913 and 1917 under Jose Santullano, known as El Cuitu, the building marked the moment when Oviedo embraced modern collective housing. Its completion coincided with a period of urban growth when well-off citizens sought new, impressive homes in the expanding city.
The building blends Art Nouveau and Baroque Revival styles with mythological figures carved into its ornaments and elaborate balconies. This mixture of artistic languages reflects the taste of the upper-class residents who made their homes here in the early 1900s.
Visiting the building allows you to view its impressive exterior and fine details from the street. The best way to see its different facades and decorative work is by walking around the structure on the surrounding streets.
After the original developer went bankrupt in 2012, the building stood empty for about a decade before new ownership brought it back to life. This period of abandonment left the structure vulnerable but also allowed for careful restoration to follow.
