Ermita de Sant Gil

The Ermita de Sant Gil is a mountain chapel in Queralbs situated at approximately 1955 meters elevation with three round windows set into its facade. The small building displays religious symbols on its window frames and continues to serve as an active place of worship for pilgrims and visitors.

The structure was built in 1615 at the location where Saint Gil is believed to have lived around 700 CE according to local records. It was later enhanced with materials from an earlier church and received additional architectural elements during a 1999 restoration project.

The chapel is named after Saint Gil and served as a place where local people left personal offerings to express their devotion. Visitors can still see votive tiles and inscriptions today, revealing how the community used this remote location to connect with their faith.

Reaching the chapel requires following steep mountain trails that demand sure-footedness and proper hiking shoes. It is wise to start early and bring plenty of water, as the location is remote and offers no facilities.

During the 1999 renovation, components from the earlier Nuria sanctuary were incorporated into the chapel, including a vaulted doorway and railing. These salvaged pieces directly connect the present chapel to an older religious structure that once stood elsewhere.
