Teatre Principal, theatre in Lleida, Spain
The Teatre Principal is a theatre in Lleida with a large stage, comfortable seating, and classical architectural details like ornate pillars. The hall holds around 1500 seats and features good acoustics suited for various types of performances.
The original Teatre Principal burned down on the night of October 22, 1876, destroying this community space for artists. The current building was inaugurated in 1951 after decades of planning that began in the 1940s to construct a new theatre.
The theatre's name reflects its role as a primary cultural venue for the city. Today visitors experience it mainly through film screenings and local events like Animac, an animation cinema festival held here regularly.
The theatre is located on Plaça Paeria and is equipped with multiple exits and stairs for easy movement through the building. Visitors can find historic details at the glass display cases of the main entrance and attend daily film and theatre screenings.
During construction in 1949, workers discovered remains of a very old building called the House of the General from the late 1500s buried beneath the theatre. This archaeological finding revealed Lleida's deep history and is still commemorated today by a bust placed at the main entrance.
