Reserva natural Integral de Los Islotes, Nature reserve in Teguise, Spain
The Reserva Natural Integral de Los Islotes is a fully protected marine reserve off Lanzarote's coast, encompassing Montaña Clara island and several rock formations. The site covers 165 hectares and remains completely closed to public entry.
Spain first established the reserve in 1986 as part of a larger park system. It was reclassified in 1994 under new Canary Islands natural protection laws to enable stricter conservation measures.
The site serves as a breeding ground for seabirds, particularly storm petrels that nest here. The reserve's strict closure to visitors reflects how important it is to keep these species undisturbed during nesting season.
The reserve is not open to visitors, as it must remain undisturbed for conservation purposes. Those interested in exploring nearby marine environments can undertake boat trips or water activities from other locations on Lanzarote instead.
The area hosts more than 100 terrestrial insect species, including a specialized bug found nowhere else but on the eastern rock. This isolation has allowed small creatures to develop their own distinct forms of life.
