Torre del Reloj del antiguo Cabildo, cultural property in Chiclana de la Frontera, Spain
The Torre del Reloj del antiguo Cabildo is a slender stone tower on the main square of Chiclana de la Frontera, built on top of a surviving arch from the old town walls and featuring stacked square sections topped with a domed octagonal bell chamber. The structure displays clean neoclassical lines with carefully finished regional stone called ostionera, complete with visible joints and horizontal divisions separating each section.
The original building was constructed between 1759 and 1787, replacing an earlier structure that was part of the town walls. A new tower was built over the surviving arch in 1757 to accommodate a clock by Seville clockmaker José Varales, and in 1787 the timepiece from the neighboring church was installed at the top.
Locals call the tower "Arquillo del Reloj" and it has served as a public timekeeper for the community for centuries. The name reflects its original role in helping townspeople track time and shows how deeply the structure is woven into daily life.
The tower sits directly on the main square next to the Church of San Juan Bautista, making it easy to locate and navigate the area. Visitors should arrive during early morning or late afternoon hours to capture the best light for photographs and experience fewer crowds around the structure.
The bell chimes were originally controlled by the neighboring church until 1787, when the church's own clock was moved to the tower's top. This shift marked when the tower assumed its role as the square's primary timekeeper, transforming it from merely a structural element into the community's official timer.
