Tytyri Mine Experience, Underground mine museum in Lohja, Finland.
The Tytyri Mine Experience is an underground mining museum in Lohja accessed through a tunnel network beneath Lake Lohja and the city. The accessible sections reach depths of around 100 meters and reveal the infrastructure used for limestone extraction.
Mining started in 1897 with surface quarrying, but shifted to underground limestone extraction in 1947 as resources moved deeper. The site opened to the public as a museum in 1988.
The themed chambers display how the earth developed naturally over time, showing layers and geological changes that shaped the region. Visitors walk through spaces designed to explain what rocks and minerals reveal about the landscape's past.
The temperature underground stays constant year-round, so bring warm clothing for your visit. Sturdy footwear is recommended as tunnel floors can be uneven in places.
A shaft at the site extending over 300 meters deep serves as a testing facility for KONE Corporation's high-rise elevator systems. This allows engineers to test elevators under extreme conditions.
