Villa romana del Río Verde

Villa Romana del Rio Verde is a Roman residence near Marbella with preserved living quarters and multiple rooms situated along the Mediterranean coastline. The structure contains mosaic-decorated floors and various functional spaces that show how the residents organized their daily life.

The residence was built during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and combined living spaces with facilities for fish processing and marine resource use. The ruins show that this building played an important role in the economy of the Roman coastal region.

The intricate floor mosaics display detailed geometric patterns that show the skill of Roman artisans who worked in southern Spain. These decorated floors reveal how the wealthy residents of this coastal property lived and what they valued in their homes.

The archaeological site is best visited during cool morning hours since it is outdoors and can be uncomfortable in extreme heat. Sturdy shoes are recommended because the ground is uneven and parts of it are accessed by steps.

Culinary-themed mosaic floors were found at this location, representing some of the few remaining examples of wealthy Roman coastal homes in Andalusia. These specific designs show that the residents placed great value on their food culture.
