Tall Tree & The Eye

Tall Tree & The Eye is a stainless steel sculpture made of seventy-three reflective spheres arranged along three axes near the northern pond. The spheres create multiple mirror effects that constantly shift as you walk around the work, turning the surrounding landscape into fragmented reflections.

Indian artist Anish Kapoor created this work in 2009 specifically for the Guggenheim Bilbao courtyard. The sculpture joined the museum's permanent collection from the beginning and represents a key moment in the artist's exploration of reflection and space.

The sculpture represents mathematical principles through its arrangement of spheres, examining the relationship between objects and their environment.

The sculpture sits near the museum's northern pond and is visible from outside without charge. View it from different angles to see how the reflections shift and reveal different images with the changing light.

Each steel sphere acts as an individual mirror, capturing different portions of the surroundings and the museum itself. This creates an optical illusion where some spheres appear bright while others seem dark, even though they are identical.
