Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Art museum in Indautxu, Bilbao, Spain
Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is an art museum in Bilbao spanning two connected buildings that display paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from medieval times to the modern period. The collection holds more than 10,000 pieces and sits within Doña Casilda Iturrizar park in the Indautxu neighborhood.
The museum opened in 1908 and grew over the decades through donations and acquisitions. In 1945 it merged with the Museum of Modern Art, leading to construction of a new building at its present site.
The museum carries the Basque name Bilboko Arte Ederren Museoa and organizes its rooms by artistic schools. Today visitors see how regional themes hang alongside international works, both traditions speaking to each other across the walls.
The museum sits inside Doña Casilda Iturrizar park and opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00, with wheelchair access and guided tours available. The quietest hours tend to be late morning on weekdays, when fewer groups move through the rooms.
The museum houses its own restoration workshop where specialists work continuously on preserving old paintings and sculptures. Visitors can sometimes watch through glass panels as this invisible work takes place.
