Château de Saint-Amé, 19th-century château in Ramatuelle, France
The Château de Saint-Amé is a 19th-century castle situated above a six-hectare botanical park featuring greenhouses, rose gardens, and pergolas. The property stands near Pampelonne beach and remains private, allowing only views of the exterior grounds and surrounding landscape.
The castle was built in 1917 by Victor Larue, who accumulated wealth through manufacturing ice blocks for colonies via his Indochina Breweries and Ice Companies. His commercial success in Asia allowed him to construct this estate on the French Riviera.
The house served as a filming location for the 1970 movie 'Le Gendarme en balade' starring Louis de Funès and 'Bilitis' in 1977. These productions connected the property to French cinema history and made it recognizable to audiences of that era.
The property remains private and visits are limited to exterior views and the surrounding park areas. Visitors can view the botanical gardens and building facade from the estate perimeter.
The building underwent complete restoration in the 2000s, with interior stained glass windows specially crafted by artist Carlo Roccella. These artistic details demonstrate the care taken during the renewal of the historic structure.
