Athenopolis

Athenopolis is an ancient Greek settlement that lay in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez on the Mediterranean coast. The location sat in a strategic position that allowed trade connections between the coastal area and inland regions.

Phocaean Greeks from Massilia founded the settlement between 440 and 300 BCE as part of their Mediterranean trading network. It was one of several outposts they established along the coast to expand their commercial reach.

The name joins Athena, goddess of wisdom, with 'polis' and shows how Greeks here practiced their religious traditions. The settlement reflected the spiritual and military values that defined Massilian colonial communities.

The exact location lies underwater or near the shore and is not easy to visit directly. Those interested in the area's ancient history can find information in local museums in Saint-Tropez and nearby Grimaud.

A bronze sacrificial tripod discovered in Saint-Tropez is the only known archaeological artifact connected to this ancient site. The find suggests that religious ceremonies may have taken place here.
