Tour du Portalet, Defensive tower in Saint-Tropez, France

The Portalet Tower stands at the entrance of Saint-Tropez harbor at the start of the main jetty, overlooking the bay below. This stone structure rises from the water's edge and commands views across the Mediterranean expanse.

Built in the 15th century, the tower was part of a four-tower defensive system guarding Saint-Tropez against maritime raids. It formed a network of watchtowers designed to detect threats approaching from the water.

The tower reflects how Saint-Tropez residents once depended on coastal defenses to protect their harbor from sea-based threats. You can see this protective instinct built into the thick stone walls that still stand today.

The tower sits at the end of Grande Jetée du Port and remains accessible year-round as you walk along the jetty. It provides clear views of the harbor basin and open sea, making it easy to stop by at any time.

Only three towers from the original medieval fortification system survive today, and this one sits in the most accessible location on the main jetty. The other surviving towers are harder to reach, making this one a rare and easy-to-visit piece of the city's defensive past.
