Saint-Tropez, Mediterranean resort town in French Riviera, France
Saint-Tropez is a commune on the Mediterranean in the French Riviera that sits on a natural harbor and belongs to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The old town extends upward from the waterfront promenade through narrow lanes that lead to a central square, surrounded by houses with terracotta roofs and facades in soft pastel shades.
The settlement began as a fishing village and developed over the centuries into a trading post. From the 1950s onward, tourism changed the appearance of the place and turned the commune into an international destination.
Each summer the town becomes a gathering place for international visitors who come to sit in harborside cafés and walk through the narrow streets. In the winding lanes, small boutiques alternate with art galleries while fishermen lay their nets beside modern sailing boats at the quay.
Visitors can take a walk along the harbor and then continue through narrow lanes toward the citadel on the hill. The Pampelonne coastline can be reached by regular shuttle buses that leave from the town center during summer.
The gendarmerie museum displays exhibits about French law enforcement and cinema, including the films that made the place known worldwide. A separate area dedicated to the maritime past is housed in the 17th-century citadel on the hill.
