Palacio de Sotofermoso

Palacio de Sotofermoso, Renaissance palace in Abadía, Spain

Palacio de Sotofermoso is a Renaissance residence in Abadía with a square floor plan and a Mudéjar-style courtyard featuring double galleries of five arches on each side, bearing the Alba family coat of arms. The courtyard displays the architectural blend of two distinct styles that shaped the building's character over time.

The building began as a Templar fortress in the 13th century and underwent significant transformations. It later became a Cistercian abbey before eventually passing to the House of Alba, who shaped it into its current Renaissance form.

The residence served as a gathering place for artists and writers who drew creative energy from its surroundings. The rooms reflect how local nobility connected art, literature, and architecture in their daily lives.

The residence welcomes visitors during daytime hours with no admission fee required. Comfortable shoes are recommended as you explore the interior spaces and courtyard at a leisurely pace.

A marble statue of Andromeda survives from the once-grand Renaissance gardens that surrounded the residence. This single piece hints at how elaborate and carefully designed the outdoor spaces used to be.
