Castle of Montemayor del Río, Medieval fortress in Province of Salamanca, Spain.
Castle of Montemayor del Rio is a medieval fortress on a hilltop in the Province of Salamanca, featuring rectangular towers at each corner. The structure has two separate defensive enclosures with an irregular layout that follows the natural slope of the land.
The castle was established in 1538 when King Carlos I granted it to Juan de Silva y Ribera, who served as captain general of Navarra. It was built to serve as both an administrative center and defensive stronghold for the region.
Today it functions as a Medieval Interpretation Center, where visitors learn about how people lived in medieval times through exhibits displayed throughout the rooms. The spaces and architectural features help visitors understand daily life from that era.
The hilltop location means visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes for the climb. Tours are available seasonally and it is best to check ahead for current opening times before planning your visit.
One interior room features a striking floor design made from an aerial photograph of the nearby village of San Vicente. This creative approach gives visitors an unusual geographic perspective from inside the castle.
