Built between the 3rd and 4th centuries during the Late Roman Empire, this fortification controlled passage between the cities of Cáparra and Salmantica.
The structure represents Roman military engineering on the Via de la Plata, a major route connecting Emerita Augusta with northern territories.

Recent studies suggest this building might have served as a snow storage facility for preserving goods transported along the Roman road.
