Viaduc de Guerville

The Guerville Viaduct is a major highway bridge that spans 360 meters across a valley, carrying the A13 motorway with three lanes in each direction over railways and roads below. A third deck was added in 2019 to accommodate around 120,000 vehicles daily and improve emergency access along this critical transport corridor.

Construction of the original two-deck structure took place between 1963 and 1965 to handle growing traffic between Paris and Normandy during the post-war expansion period. The addition of a third deck in 2019 reflects how traffic demands on this route have evolved significantly over more than 50 years.

The viaduct represents a major engineering achievement of the post-war era and continues to shape how people move between Paris and Normandy today. It reflects the ambitions of that time to modernize France through bold infrastructure projects.

The viaduct is best viewed during daylight hours when traffic is lighter and visibility of the structure and surrounding landscape is clearer. The best vantage points are from the surrounding roads or walking paths near the valley floor.

The structure required specialized engineering solutions because of its location near protected Natura 2000 natural areas and limestone cliffs along the Seine River. These environmental constraints made the construction and expansion particularly complex for the engineers involved.
