Riisitunturi, Hill in Posio, Finland.
Riisitunturi is a hill in southern Finnish Lapland that rises about 465 meters and forms the centerpiece of a national park by the same name. The landscape spreads across sloping bogs and thick coniferous forests that cover a vast area.
This area gained protection as a national park in 1982, making it a managed space for nature conservation. The decision helped preserve the natural character of the region and its wildlife for future generations.
The name comes from a Sámi word meaning snow, reflecting the deep historical connection between this place and the indigenous communities of the region. Visitors today can sense this bond with the land through the way the landscape is experienced and respected.
Several marked trails of varying length are available, from short family walks to longer hikes through bogs and forests. Sturdy footwear is needed, as the ground can be soft and slippery when wet.
On clear winter days, the spruce trees become coated with thick layers of frost crystals formed by moisture from a nearby lake. This natural process transforms the forest into a landscape of white-covered branches and trunks.
