St John's College, College of the University of Oxford in St Giles, United Kingdom
St John's College is a college of the University of Oxford in St Giles and consists of seven courtyards with buildings from different periods. The site stretches between Beaumont Street and St Giles and includes chapels, libraries, dining halls, and gardens.
Thomas White founded this institution in 1555 with the aim of training clergy. Canterbury Quad was completed in 1636 and marked a major building expansion for the college.
The name honors John the Baptist, though the chapel first carried a different dedication. Visitors today notice the blend of building traditions that grew over centuries, giving each courtyard its own character.
Some courtyards are open to the public during certain hours, while others remain accessible only to members. The main entrance is located on St Giles Road in the northern part of the city center.
The college manages one of the largest financial endowments of any Oxford institution. These funds enable programs and support that many other colleges cannot offer to the same degree.
