Beddington Zero Energy Development, Carbon neutral residential complex in Hackbridge, United Kingdom.
Beddington Zero Energy Development is a residential complex with 82 homes and workspaces in south London. The buildings use solar panels, natural ventilation, and efficient heating systems to minimize energy needs.
The Peabody Trust began construction in 2000 and completed the project by 2002. It was the first large residential development in Britain designed to produce as much energy as it uses.
Residents share cars and buy fresh produce from local growers nearby. The community spaces are designed so people naturally interact and support each other's daily routines.
The site is well served by public transport and has safe walking paths and cycle routes between buildings. Keep in mind this is a private residential complex, so photography in certain areas may be restricted.
The complex runs on a wood-fired system that generates both electricity and heat at the same time. Much of the building material comes from recycled sources, which significantly reduced construction waste.
