Aveline's Hole, Prehistoric cave in Burrington Combe, Somerset, England

Located in the Mendip Hills limestone formation, Aveline's Hole extends 68 meters in length and reaches a depth of 16 meters below ground level.

Two local men discovered the cave in 1797 while pursuing a rabbit, leading to the identification of Britain's earliest scientifically dated cemetery from 10,200 years ago.

The cave contained remains of over fifty individuals along with artifacts including perforated animal teeth, red ochre, and fossil ammonites indicating burial practices.

The University of Bristol Spelæological Society manages access to the cave, which remains closed during specific periods to protect hibernating bat populations.

The archaeological site holds the largest collection of Mesolithic human remains ever discovered in Britain, though many artifacts were lost during wartime.
