Cawdor Castle, Medieval castle in Highland, Scotland.
Cawdor Castle is a stone fortress in the Highlands with a medieval tower at its core and later wings extending outward. The building contains multiple rooms decorated with paintings, antique furnishings, and tapestries, while surrounding grounds feature distinct garden areas with planted beds and pathways.
The structure began as a fortified tower in 1454 and expanded gradually over the following centuries as the needs of its inhabitants changed. The Campbell family shaped its development, transforming it from a defensive stronghold into a residential home.
The name comes from Gaelic meaning "meeting of waters." Inside, rooms display family portraits, tapestries, and furnishings that reveal how the occupants lived and valued beauty throughout the centuries.
Access from the parking area is straightforward, with clear paths leading to the main entrance and surrounding grounds. Visitors can walk through rooms at their own pace or join guided tours to learn more about the collections and layout.
At the heart of the building stands an ancient holly tree that has grown there for centuries. This natural element was incorporated into the structure when it was built and remains visible in the lower levels today.
