The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft, Transport museum in Sandtoft, United Kingdom
The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft is a transport museum set on a former military airfield in Sandtoft, Lincolnshire, England, and holds the largest collection of preserved trolleybuses in the world. The vehicles come from many British and overseas cities and are displayed across open ground and in covered buildings on the site.
The museum was founded in 1969 by a group of enthusiasts who took over the former RAF base after it closed in 1958, using the space to save trolleybuses that were being withdrawn from British cities at the time. Over the following decades, the collection grew as vehicles from other countries were also acquired.
On open days, visitors can actually ride the trolleybuses along a short route on the former airfield, which gives a direct sense of how these vehicles once moved through city streets. The experience draws people who remember using trolleybuses as children alongside others who are simply curious about how they worked.
The site covers a large area of open ground, so comfortable footwear is a good idea, especially in wet weather when the ground can become soft. Visiting on an event day gives the best chance of seeing vehicles in motion rather than just parked in the sheds.
One of the buildings on site dates from 1906 and was originally built as housing for managers during the construction of Immingham Docks, then moved to Sandtoft later. It is an early example of prefabricated construction, assembled from ready-made panels rather than built in the traditional way.
