King George V Dock

King George V Dock is a maritime facility in the Royal Docks that spans a large body of water with direct access to the Thames via a lock system. The basin can accommodate substantial vessels and is now home to modern uses alongside its historic waterfront structure.

Construction by the Port of London Authority started in 1912, though the First World War delayed the project until completion in 1921. It became the final enclosed dock built upstream in London's development.

The dock supported the evolution of maritime commerce in London, handling major vessels like the RMS Mauretania during the peak of commercial shipping activities.

London City Airport sits on the northern bank, accessible by the Docklands Light Railway. The location is easy to reach, and visitors should be aware of the airport operations nearby.

The site later became the foundation for London City Airport, with its runway opening in 1987. This transformation shows how the historic dock was repurposed to serve modern air transport needs.
