The structure consists of a two-story gatehouse with remaining walls of a hall, positioned on a strategic elevated location at 56 meters.
Initially constructed as a wooden fortification in the 12th century by the de Barry family, the castle transformed into stone structures during the late 13th century.
The castle incorporates Welsh medieval military architecture with elements such as a portcullis system, defensive arrow slits, and a first-floor great hall.
Visitors can access the castle grounds throughout the year and examine the remaining stone structures, including the gatehouse passage with its original arch.
The upper chamber of the gatehouse contained both a chapel and the mechanical system for operating the castle's portcullis through a specialized windlass mechanism.
