All Saints Church, Boltongate, Grade I listed church in Boltongate, England
All Saints Church is a Gothic-style church building featuring limestone walls, sandstone slate roofing over the nave, and green slate covering the chancel. A hexagonal stair turret rises from the side as a distinctive structural element.
The building was constructed around 1350 on the foundations of a Norman church from the 12th century. The architecture incorporates defensive elements that reflected the practical needs of its time.
The interior features stained glass windows by Charles Kempe and Thomas Willement depicting religious figures and Christian symbols including a pelican. These works fill the space with color and tell stories from Christian tradition.
This is an active Anglican place of worship serving the local parish through the deanery of Solway and diocese of Carlisle. Visitors should be aware the building is regularly used for worship and prayer services.
A sandstone relief on the north wall depicts two knights in combat, a rare example of medieval military imagery within religious architecture. This carving offers a glimpse into the earthly concerns that occupied the sacred space.
