Beaulieu Palace House, Manor house museum in Hampshire, England
Beaulieu Palace House is a Victorian residence with Gothic elements overlooking the Beaulieu River millpond. Its interior features grand halls decorated with family portraits and historical artifacts on display.
The building started as a gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey but was acquired in 1538 by Thomas Wriothesley during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Following this change, it became a private residence and later the home of the Montagu family.
The Victorian Kitchen displays traditional cooking methods that visitors can watch as historical recipes from the Montagu family collection are prepared. This working kitchen offers insight into how people lived in earlier times.
The estate offers several places to explore: the main house, a motor museum, and the ruins of a former monastery. Plan for a half-day or full-day visit with plenty of outdoor space to walk around.
The house features a hidden entrance concealed behind a false bookshelf door that leads to Lord Montagu's private library. This secret passage was designed to access his personal record collection and private papers.
