Blakesley Hall, Tudor house museum in Yardley, Birmingham, England

Blakesley Hall is a timber-framed residence from the Tudor period with dark wooden beams that contrast sharply with whitewashed walls and traditional herringbone patterns on the exterior. The house displays typical construction techniques of the era with characteristic details and skilled craftsmanship.

Richard Smalbroke built this house in 1590, making it one of the oldest buildings in Birmingham and a reflection of merchant wealth in that era. The structure has endured for centuries and remained as a witness to local development.

The bedchamber displays original wall paintings from Tudor times, showing how wealthy merchant families decorated their homes and displayed their prosperity. These decorations offer insight into daily life and values of the period.

The house is best explored when arriving early, as visitor numbers are typically lower and rooms can be viewed at a comfortable pace. Access is straightforward, and the rooms are easy to navigate through.

During World War II, the building was struck by a bomb in November 1941, requiring extensive repairs and reconstruction. The recovery took many years, and the house did not reopen as a museum until 1957.
