Church of the Good Shepherd, Nottingham

The Church of the Good Shepherd is a Catholic church with an elongated hexagonal footprint and vertical concrete walls. The interior showcases modern design elements including colored glass windows and an open layout where worshippers gather closely during services.

Architect Gerard Goalen designed this Art Deco building, which opened in 1964 and replaced an earlier brick church from 1929. The structure became a symbol of modern sacred architecture in the postwar period.

The interior configuration reflects Liturgical Movement principles, with an altar placement that enables 600 people to participate in religious ceremonies.

The building is easy to spot from outside thanks to its distinctive concrete tower and clear geometric shape. Visitors will find a well-maintained church after it underwent major restoration work in recent years.

The roof and concrete structure suffered from moisture damage but were restored through major funding from Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This investment saved one of the region's most distinctive modern buildings from deterioration.
