Cowal Highland Gathering, Annual Highland games in Dunoon, Scotland.
The Cowal Highland Gathering is an annual Highland games event held in Dunoon, Scotland, bringing together athletes, dancers, and pipe bands from around the world. It takes place over three days each August at Dunoon Stadium, on the Cowal peninsula.
The gathering was founded in 1894 by Robert Cameron as a formal competition celebrating Scottish traditions. Over the following decades it grew steadily and became one of the largest events of its kind in Scotland.
The Highland dancing championships at this gathering are among the largest in the world, drawing competitors from countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. On stage, dancers wear traditional kilts and perform steps that have been passed down through generations.
Arriving early in the day is a good idea, as the stands and open areas fill up quickly once the competitions are underway. Dunoon is most easily reached by ferry, so it is worth planning the crossing in advance, especially during the event weekend.
The Argyll Shield, awarded to winning Grade 1 pipe bands since 1906, was originally a gift from Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll. The shield is still presented at every gathering, making it one of the oldest active prizes in Scottish games.
