St John’s Church, Category A listed church building in Dunoon, Scotland
St John's Church is a Gothic Revival church building in Dunoon featuring a raised choir gallery positioned behind the central pulpit and a horseshoe-shaped gallery for worshippers. The interior displays Normandy Gothic characteristics throughout its layout and design.
The church was built in 1877 by architect Robert Alexander Bryden, replacing an earlier Free Church building that occupied the same site. This replacement reflected the changing religious landscape of the period.
The church contains stained glass windows created by Stephen Adam and Gordon Webster, which shape the interior. These works are examples of artistic craftsmanship that visitors notice when they enter.
The building has limited visiting hours, so you should check ahead before planning a trip. Contacting in advance helps ensure you do not arrive when the building is closed.
A three-manual pipe organ built by Brook & Co in 1895 survives inside and stands as one of the largest organ instruments found in the Cowal region. This preserved instrument demonstrates the musical equipment that characterized churches of that era.
